Home Practice Workshop

Friday March 5th, 6-9pm with Meaghan. Cost: $35

If you are trying to practice at home, but finding it hard to get motivated, or are unsure of what to do, what time of day, or just find that there are many obstacles in the way of getting onto your mat, then this is the workshop for you. This workshop will be helpful for both beginners and seasoned practitioners. Whether you have never practiced at home, already do but want to do so more, or used to but have been away from your mat for a while, I hope to inspire, and motivate and support you on your journey of home practice.

Why have a home practice? To me, home practice is the meat of yoga, class is where i come for community, inspiration and challenge, my daily home practice is where i get to come home to myself, learn and open to who and how i am, as well as do the poses that are specifically how i want to open my body. Home practice at first for me was a great struggle, and now is a total joy some days, and basic maintenance on others, but always with me.

Dance Workshop: Moving with Change, facilitated by Lauren Clarke

Saturday November 21st, 1-4pm, 2009. Cost: $35 (subsidies available upon request)

Our workshop with Lauren last spring was a great success, really fun, and we invite you to join her this November to explore themes of presence, awareness and change, themes that often arise in our yoga practices. This workshop provides a different method with similar goals to yoga, the method being dance and movement.

Workshop description:

From moment to moment we change. Our bodies fill with air when we breathe in and empty when we exhale. Our thoughts jump from yesterday's chocolate bar to a conflict at work. Our relationships transition from distance to connected and apart again. From moment to moment, we have the possibility of choosing how we move with change.

During this three hour workshop, you will gain clarity on how you encounter change and the choices you make when faced with transition. We will experiment together using a variety of verbal and non-verbal exercises to feel our full range of aliveness. You are invited to come ready to move with and without music, through body and words.

Lauren Clarke, MSW, lives and works in Toronto and provides psychotherapy for groups and individuals seeking healing and growth. Venerable Shenyen's talks and workshops

The Four Reminders

A presentation of the Buddhist response to the basic existential facts of our human situation. These teachings on the value of a human rebirth, the fact of our impending death, the law of karma, and the sufferings of samsaric existence help us to overcome our ignorance about the real dimensions of our life, the effects of our actions and the goals we can aspire to.

Loving Kindness Meditation

This is a practice common to all traditions of Buddhism and allows the natural radiance of the mind to find a path of expression. This introduction will explain briefly why meditation is important and how to keep meditation practice fresh.

Spiritual Heroism: Tonglen Meditation and Yoga

Tonglen - the practice of giving and taking - is a meditation from the Tibetan tradition that transforms our locked-in suffering mind into the outward-looking mind of a spiritual hero. By visualising taking on the pain of all beings we express fearlessness. And by visualising giving them all our joy and goodness we express generosity. Our own poverty and fear begin to melt away.

Who is Shenyen?

On Meaghan Johnson's travels in India she met an amazing, insightful, incredibly funny Buddhist monk who hails form Liverpool, England. Venerable Shenyen (or Martin if you wish) has a way of relating renunciation, compassion and correct view that makes these topics exciting, alive, thrilling even. Meaghan saw first hand how he ignited a spark in people to lead richer, more meaningful lives, and to walk full of love and wonder through the spaces of their own cultures. Venerable Shenyen's love of contemporary art, football (soccer) and music makes him a 'hooligan-monk'* that anyone can relate to.

Your Yoga: Bringing Your Practice Home

This workshop is on how to develop and maintain a personal yoga practice you can do daily (or how frequently you wish) in your home.

Topics covered: restorative yoga poses, natural immune system boosters, botanical medicine, vitamins, minerals, homeopathics, dietary changes and how to make an informed decision about the 'flu' shot.

Awaken your Spiritual Self through Guided Meditation

This workshop uses Tazae chanting, prayer, and guided imagery. Led by a Parish Priest, in this workshop participants will be invited into self-exploration, self-discovery and self-celebration through a ‘guided meditation.’ The workshop will begin and end with the use of simple chanting and prayer, and readings from “A Tree Full of Angels” (Seeing the Holy in the Ordinary). Entry into the meditation itself is enabled by relaxation through simple breathing and muscle control exercises. This meditation is in the form of a narrative that leads the participant through a series of experiences, some of which may be ‘trigger points’ to self-awareness and self-understanding. Opportunity isgiven for private, personal reflection following the meditation and for group discussion.
